Today's News Online
Today's News Online is an intranet news monitoring service used by the communications branches within the BC Government. This sophisticated, mission-critical service provides up-to-the-minute desktop access to news items from newspapers, radio and television in the form of text, audio and video clips.
Today's News Online is comprised of several stand-alone applications which communicate with the main Oracle database.
- Otis is a Java servlet that delivers the website.
- Kalel is a Java application used by the administrators and editors. It allows the editors to manage the hundreds of news stories that are automatically imported by Jorel each day. It also allows the administrators to manage the users and design of the website.
- Jorel is a Java application that is designed to run in the background. Depending on where it is running, Jorel does different tasks. On the application server Jorel manages the import of newspapers, the indexing of content, and the creation of email alerts. Jorel also runs on capture computers, where it records television, radio, closed captioning, and RSS feeds. Jorel is also responsible for scaling movie files to a size suitable for the mobile version of the website, and monitoring external websites for changed content.
- Clark is an application that creates the daily print edition of Today's News.
